Staying True To Your Faith While In College

It seems like we just got out of school for the summer and now we are getting ready to return within a few weeks. Some of us returning this fall are upperclassmen who have experienced the ends and the outs of campus life while others are bravely entering college for the first time. Regardless, if this this is your first semester or last semester in college, you will be sure to run into temptation.

Many enter college with strong roots in the Christian faith and ultimately loose sight of the end goal. Distractions come in many forms to everyone enrolled and if your not careful you get caught up in a whirlwind of trouble.

So how can a college student stay true to themselves while in college?

Remember that God has a purpose for you being there. We were all placed here for a reason. Believers know we have a greater purpose in service to God rather than service to ourselves. Matthew 5:13 tells us that we are the salt of the earth. The power to add and change peoples lives rests in each and everyone of us. We can help bring substance and flavor back in those lives that need it.

Don’t be influenced by peer pressure. Proverbs 1:10-15 gives a great depiction of what peer pressure looks like and how you should deal with it.

My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent. If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait for blood, Let us ambush the innocent without cause; Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, Even whole, as those who go down to the pit; read more.
We will find all kinds of precious wealth, We will fill our houses with spoil; Throw in your lot with us, We shall all have one purse,” My son, do not walk in the way with them Keep your feet from their path,

Recognize that everyone that says they are your friend may not be. Ask God for wisdom in picking God friends that add value to your life not take away. Get around people who want to grow.

Someone once told me that if I’m the smartest one in my group then maybe I should consider changing groups. What does this mean?

Get around people you can learn something from! It’s not always about being the one who is the most knowledge but the most teachable.

Always remember who you are in Christ. Entering a new realm can hinder us from staying true to not only ourselves, but also who we are in the body of Christ. Sometimes we may fall into crowds that are completely different from us and we tend to shape and mold ourselves into their liking and what they believe in. Such as, drugs, sex, parties, even cursing.

James 4:7 enlightens us on how we should handle situations such as this.

“We are submitted to God, and the devil flees from us because we resist him in the Name of Jesus”. Now, all these things can lead to depression, losing sight of who you are as a Christian, and even failure to succeed in college, but if you read Philippians 3:14 you will find that it says, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize to which God in Christ Jesus is calling us upward”.

How powerful is that? Remember to always keep your eye on the prize, because God does not want you to fail, but even if you do, simply get back up because greater is coming and God only wants for you to prosper. Even if you’ve lost all motivation to keep moving forward, because you either feel guilt or as if you will never be forgiven, refer back to Philippians 3:14.

Ephesians 1:7 reminds us of our new nature in Christ.

“I am forgiven of all my sins and washed in the Blood of Jesus Christ”.

Most of us have either gone through this or are facing it now and do not even realize it. However, there is a way to keep hold and stay true to yourself and most importantly to your Heavenly Father.

Continue to read your word. Trust me, I know it can be difficult at times, but you can start with the three simple verses I have provided above. I can guarantee that if you just read these three scriptures daily, you will gain power, courage, and the ability to stay true to God because you are an OVERCOMER, you are FORGIVEN, and you are DELIVERED.
